Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment 

Michael P. Duffey received an undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin. He has served in the federal government for the majority of his career.

Duffey served as Program Associate Director for National Security at the Office of Management and Budget. He has served in multiple positions in the Department of Defense, including Deputy Chief of Staff to the Defense Secretary, Chief of Staff to the Defense Under Secretary for Research and Engineering, and held several positions in the former Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Logistics and Technology.

Duffey was confirmed by the Senate to his current role as Under Secretary of War for Acquisition and Sustainment and was sworn into office in June 2025.

Under Secretary of War for Acquisition and Sustainment Michael Duffey announced the launch of the Build Freedom workforce development initiative this month and presented a $10 million investment to the mikeroweWORKS Foundation Scholarship program.

“America’s strength has always been forged by people who build, manufacture, and innovate,” said Under Secretary Duffey. “BuildFreedom.US will bridge talent with opportunity to build meaningful careers, ensuring our workforce is ready for the challenges of tomorrow.”

The Pentagon explained, “BuildFreedom.US is a national initiative designed to address critical talent shortages across the defense industrial base. The program unites government, industry, and educational institutions to increase awareness of purpose-driven careers and provide scholarships for Americans pursuing high-paying, AI-proof jobs in the skilled trades.”
